Lack of Proper Medical Care
Access to basic health care should not depend on where you are born.
Many Haitians, particularly in rural areas, live far from a clinic or hospital. Where facilities exist, they may lack staff, equipment, medicine or reliable electricity. The cost of care and transport can put treatment out of reach for families living in poverty.
Public health challenges are closely linked to other issues: limited access to clean water and sanitation contributes to the spread of waterborne disease, and disasters such as the 2010 earthquake have severely damaged health infrastructure.
Priorities for better health
- More trained doctors, nurses, midwives and community health workers who stay in Haiti
- Clinics and hospitals with reliable power, equipment and medicines
- Maternal and child health services
- Clean water, sanitation and disease prevention
- Mental health support, especially after disasters and violence
Getting involved
Medical professionals in the diaspora can volunteer with established medical missions, train local staff or support telemedicine initiatives. Everyone can help by supporting reputable health organizations working in Haiti and by raising awareness of health needs.
